Perspectives in the Parks: Wandering in Wiregrass

Wiregrass (Aristida beyrichiana) is a mysterious plant. If you have ever hiked a trail through a pine savanna, you’ve probably seen this bunchgrass. It has hair-like leaves that catch fire quickly, like pine needles, and it rarely flowers unless it is burned. Pine savannas benefit from being burned, but because of fire prevention in the last century, they were disappearing. Now we are trying to bring them back, and we frequently start by planting wiregrass. In this talk, Raelene Crandall will tell you more about using this important grass to restore pine savannas and discuss what we know about its ecology and economics.
Raelene Crandall is an associate professor at the University of Florida School of Forest, Fisheries, and Geomatic Sciences.
