This coming weekend, April 5-7, University of Florida’s Graduate Comics Organization will be hosting its 20th annual Conference on Comics and Graphic Novels, “Ink and Imagination: Exploring Children’s Comics.” Join this free event on UF’s campus, which features three days of programming around children’s comics, including:
—A visit on Friday afternoon to see rare and wonderful children’s comics from the mid 20th century to today that are held in UF’s Baldwin Library of Historical Children’s Literature and Popular Culture collections
—An opportunity on Saturday afternoon to meet and see work by local artists, at an event co-organized with the Sequential Artists Workshop (SAW), Gainesville’s own non-profit cartooning school
—Two keynote addresses on Friday and Saturday evenings by cartoonist André R. Frattino and scholar Alison Halsall. Frattino is the creator of several Florida-themed children’s comics, including The Flager’s Few series and A Land Remembered, and Halsall is the editor of The LGBTQ+ Comics Studies Reader and author of Growing Up Graphic: The Comics of Children in Crisis
—Seven panels on Saturday through Sunday featuring scholars and creators discussing a wide range of children’s comics
