UF Health Shands Arts in Medicine is proud to announce the ribbon cutting celebration for the “HeART Wall: A Love Letter to Gainesville, from Gainesville,” a 208-ft long public art installation featuring over 2000 mosaic hearts created by residents of Alachua County. The celebration will take place on Saturday, July 27th from 6:00 – 7:00PM at Depot Park. This project is funded by One Nation One Project, a national arts and health initiative designed to activate the power of the arts, repair the social fabric of our nation and heal our communities. Gainesville is one of 18 cities in the US selected to participate.
The HeART Wall stands as a symbol of unity and creativity, showcasing the vibrancy and diversity of Gainesville residents. Each heart in the mosaic represents a unique thread in the fabric of the community, collectively creating a powerful visual narrative. This mosaic mural is the product of over 50 classroom and community workshops in Alachua County from August 2023 – June 2024.
Creator and lead artist Sarah Hinds is steering the ship, offering the biggest “Love Letter to Gainesville from Gainesville” our city has ever seen! Hinds has been an artist and educator for over 25 years, facilitating creativity with mediums such as hand blown glass and mosaic. She proudly calls Gainesville home.
Sarah says, “This project has been meaningful on so many levels. From visiting over 20 area schools, to creative place making, to organic conversations and friendships that have sprouted around art making tables, there have been levels upon levels of connection. The finished artwork will be a lasting legacy in Gainesville, but the process and the community will stay with me for the rest of my life.”
The ribbon cutting ceremony will officially kick-off the Summer (YOU)th Celebration at Depot Park starting at 6:00pm, a Gainesville One Nation One Project initiative. This will be a festive event with free art activities, music, swag, food, and fun for all from 6:00-10:00PM.
Attendees are encouraged to wear hats and sunscreen, and bring plenty of water to refill throughout the day, as we’ll be celebrating outdoors.
