African Humanities Students Explore History and Culture with Instagram Photo Project at the Harn Museum of Art

Students in the African Humanities course at Santa Fe College reflect on the African Art Collection at the Harn Museum of Art as part of a class assignment requiring the use of Instagram as a presentation platform to highlight African culture and influences.

The project, titled Africa in Alachua, compelled students to convey their discoveries and experience via digital photography and photo captioning. The Harn, known for its inspiring, educating and enriching collections presented an ideal setting rich with photo opportunities and contextual information.

From modern art to 5th century artifacts, the African art collection at the Harn tells a story that sheds light on the rich diversity and deep history of Africa. The museum’s collection totals more than 11,300 objects including African, Asian, modern and contemporary art, and photography with significant representations of Ancient American and oceanic art, as well as a growing collection of natural history works on paper.

We congratulate the students on completing this exciting project and invite you to get a sneak peak of the impressive African art collection at the Harn via their ‘Africa in Alachua’ Insta-lens.
