Before schools were integrated, Black teachers taught from two books; the official government sanctioned books and from other texts, written by Black authors about the realities of the Black experience. It was referred to as “the Other Book.” In the current political climate of book banning and “white washing,” this lecture series offers an experience of the history of Alachua County from the Other Book. The Final lecture in this series, on “Civil Rights to the Present”. Featured speaker is Dr. Rik Stevenson from UF African American Studies. There will also be a panel discussion with elected officials including Mayor Harvey Ward, Chief County Commissioner Charles Chestnutlll, and school board members Tina Certain and Thomas Vu, discussing the current status of racial inequities in Alachua County.
