Step back in time with guided tours of the Historic Haile Homestead and learn about the realities of slavery, and how Reconstruction and Jim Crow impacted freedmen in Alachua County.

In 1854, Thomas Evans and Serena Chesnut Haile moved their family from Camden, South Carolina to Gainesville. Their 6,200 square foot home was built by 56 enslaved laborers. Known for its one-of-a-kind “Talking Walls,” the home features over 12,500 words handwritten on by the Haile family. Explore powerful stories of the enslaved and freedmen through exhibits, films and artifacts in the visitors center and museum.
