Flashback Friday with a Classic Soundtrack of Songs with The Ruckus at the Free Fridays Concert Series

Downtown Gainesville 

The Ruckus is a new ensemble with an eclectic mix of musicians and material. The band features tight harmonies by the mother/daughter combo of Janet Rucker and Maggie Rucker along with Cathy DeWitt. Guided by this trio of singers, the band covers a broad range of music from the ’60s to the present including songs by Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Amy Winehouse and more.  

The Free Fridays Concert Series is the region’s longest-running free outdoor concert series featuring local and regional talent. Grab dinner at a downtown Gainesville restaurant, and find a cozy spot on the Bo Diddley Plaza lawn to enjoy a live music concert every Friday night through October.

The Hipp Pop-Up Series features 45-minute cabaret performances performed by well-known (and loved!) professional Hippodrome actors ‘popping up’ all over Gainesville and Alachua County. Thursday’s performance features Zoe Wilde and Just the Way You Are, a celebration of life, love, and family through contemporary musical theatre. On Friday, see David Patrick Ford and inspirational original songs.

Dr. Micah Johnson delivers a live performance of his recent book Never Had a Friend followed by a book talk and Q&A. The story follows a lonely child faced with daunting hardships and his search for friendship. Never Had a Friend explores topics of trauma, homelessness, adversity and resilience.

Let the Strawberry Supermoon Light the Way on a Guided Paddle Tour of the Santa Fe River

This summer’s first full moon, named after the plentiful strawberries ripening across the country, is also a supermoon. A supermoon occurs when the moon comes closest to the Earth in its elliptic orbit—resulting in a slightly larger-than-usual apparent size of the lunar disk as viewed from Earth. The tour includes a canoe or double kayak, safety equipment and transportation. Single kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and shuttle services for your own vessel are also available. Reservations are required.
