The City of Gainesville joins Alachua County and community partners in a month-long series of events commemorating Florida’s emancipation date – May 20, 1865 – the day when enslaved Africans first learned of their freedom in Tallahassee.

“Between Heaven & Earth: The Paintings of Alyne Harris” is a featured event of the City of Gainesville’s current “Journey to Juneteenth” celebration. The exhibition features more than 200 artworks by Gainesville native Alyne Harris (b.1942), who paints to express both her lived experiences and her profound spiritual life. The newly acquired visionary and memory paintings in this exhibition are part of the City of Gainesville’s Of This Place permanent art collection.

Rising star Decyo McDuffie makes his Free Fridays debut with a very special Juneteenth celebration concert. Decyo and the Larry Newcomb Quartet perform a concert of jazz and swing standards from Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Sarah Vaughan and more. This concert is part of the The CIty of Gainesville’s “Journey to Juneteenth” celebration. 

The Free Fridays Concert Series is the region’s longest-running free outdoor concert series featuring local and regional talent. Grab dinner at a downtown Gainesville restaurant, and find a cozy spot on the Bo Diddley Plaza lawn to enjoy a live music concert every Friday night through October.

Black landscape artists in the 1950s painted scenes from Florida including sunsets, beaches and windblown palm trees and became known as the Highwaymen. One of the original Highwaymen, Al Black is known for storytelling and salesmanship in addition to his art. Joining Al Black is Jerry Chaput and his Florida landscapes in the Highwaymen style.
