The Buddy Davis Essay contest

November 11 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

$20
Abstract illustration of diverse people thinking about diverse ideas

Sponsored every autumn by the Florida Free Speech Forum, the contest elicits essays from high school students in Alachua County and was named in honor of one of the forum founders, and a Pulitzer prize winning reporter for the Gainesville Sun. This year’s topic focused the essays on students’ responses to gun violence in schools.

The Florida Free Speech Forum presents luncheon meetings with invited speakers. Adopting a model from the City Club Forum of Cleveland, the Forum invites speakers to present their views on issues of current or widespread interest. The presentation lasts for 30 minutes, and is followed by questions from Forum members which serve either to elucidate the speakers’ point of view, or briefly to present a contrary point of view. It is a member-supported organization though visitors may attend. Luncheon though requires registration by the Friday prior to the Monday meeting. (see website)

Florida Free Speech Forum is a 501 (c) 3, not-for-profit organization supporting the First Amendment to the US Constitution, particularly citizens’ rights to engage in a rational examination of issues.
