Human Library

May 15 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

People lined up on a book shelf with the Human Library logo

Just like a good book can transport you to another place, the Human Library event on Sunday, May 15 at 2 p.m. at Cone Park Branch can take you inside another person’s experiences.

At this event, our books are Human Books – real people with real stories to share. Alachua County Library District, Altrusa International of Gainesville, and the Human Library Organization encourage you to look beyond another person’s “cover” to see their perspective at our Human Library.

Attendees can “borrow” three volunteers from diverse backgrounds for a set amount of time. In small group setting, the Human Books will share their experiences facing discrimination, bias, and stereotyping. Attendees can listen to and ask questions of people they may never meet otherwise. Human Books volunteers have personally experienced prejudice or stereotyping related to addiction, disabilities, ethnicity, family relations, gender, health, lifestyle, mental health, occupation, religion/ideology, sexual orientation, social status, or victim.

These conversations can dispel misconceptions about groups of people and, hopefully, help us all to find common ground.
