Art in the Parks: South East African Language & Literature

Gainesville150 Anniversary

To celebrate Gainesville150! 24 sculptures by David Hayes have been placed in 20 of the City’s parks. The sculptures will serve as a beacon to encourage community engagement through art and culture. Visit select parks every 2nd Saturday beginning September 14 through April 11, 2020. For more event dates please visit 352arts.org.

Join the South East African Language and Literature Conference for a poetry reading, story telling and music event.

LOCATION Wilhelmina Johnson Resource Center. 321 NW 10th St, Gainesville

Speakers include: Uwen Akpan, award winning writer, who will read excerpts from his stories that have patois or a mixture of African languages and English and French; Mr. Ghaith Majeed, an Iraqi plastic art painter and designer, who speak on his culture, music and art; Egbert Imomoh, speaking on producing Nigerian materials for children; Ms. Desmon Walker, presenting “I am a Daughter of Gainesville;” Jeana Marie Melilli, flutist; and Kole Odutola, poet, reading from his new publication the “Poet Wept.”

All ages welcome, and FREE to the public.
